The UCT Debating Union is the oldest society at the University of Cape Town. We debate British Parliamentary style and are one of the top performers at Nationals (the annual South African National Debating Championships). The UCTDU also regularly sends teams to Worlds (the World University Debating Championships).
In addition to University debating, the society is very involved in School Debating. Many UCTDU members are heavily invested in the running of the Thethani Debating League (a project under the Ubunye development agency), adjudicating in the local Rotary Schools Debating League and helping to host the Provincial Schools Debating Competion. From this competition learners are selected for trials for the teams that represent the Western Cape in the National School Debating Championships. These teams are generally coached by UCTDU members. So there is enough to keep anyone involved in debating incredibly busy.
The Society meets almost every week on a Wednesday evening at 18:00 on campus for training, followed by internal leagues at 19:00. Various social functions and other debating events are held throughout the year. We also host an annual tournament, the UCT Open, which is fast becoming one of the most prestigious tournaments in South Africa.
