Cape Town Open 2018

The Cape Town Open is the Union’s flagship tournament, held over the May Day Weekend. Every year the competition has seen some of the best debaters and judges from South Africa and abroad competing in debates of the highest quality. Success at the Cape Town Open has been a good predictor of success at a myriad of other tournaments, including the South African National Universities Debating Championships, the Pan African Universities Debating Championships, and the World Universities Debating Championships.

The Cape Town Open is a seven round, power-paired British Parliamentary Style tournament, breaking to a quarter final. There is also a novice final for debaters in their first year of university debating.

As this is an Open tournament, anyone may compete as a speaker or adjudicator. You need not attend a university, and you need not represent your university, if you do attend one. Speakers from different universities are also welcome to speak together in
teams.

A light morning meal and lunch will be provided on all days, as well as tea and coffee throughout the day. Dinner will be served alongside yakka and lakka on Saturday 28 April 2018.

Registration is open from 20 March 2018 until 13 April 2018. Payment must be made before 13 April 2018.
